Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental condition that causes your body to make involuntary movements or sounds known as "tics".
Tics can be categorized as:
Motor tics involve with uncontrollable movement of the body like blinking, shrugging one's shoulder or jerking an arm.
Vocal tics happen when people with TS make sounds like humming, clearing the throat or blurting out words or phrases out of the blue.
Tourette Syndrome can also be classified as both Simple Tics or Complex Tics. Simple tics-just a few parts of the body like blinking the eyes or sniffing while complex tics will involve several parts of the body and can form a pattern like yelling out a word and jerking the right arm followed by jumping.
Symptoms of tics usually start happening around the age of 5 to 10 years old. The majority of TS symptoms decreases during adolescence and early adulthood, but in some cases TS continues through adulthood and symptoms do get worse through age.
Tourette Syndrome affects about one percent of the population. Men are four times more at risk of developing the condition than women.
There is no cure for Tourette Syndrome, but there are preventative measures like medication, behavioral therapy or both, but Australian researchers have published a study claiming CBD can benefit people who live with Tourette Syndrome and let's find out why.
Australian researchers have published their finding in the New England Journal of Medicine that medical cannabis can effectively treat Tourette Syndrome.
They found that medical cannabis like CBD and THC caused a significant reduction in motor and vocal tics in 6 weeks.
Researchers found an important relation between the levels of cannabis in the bloodstream and the treatment of TS.
THC and CBD is used to medically treat patients in Australia and both of these cannabinoids were used on the test subjects for the study. Cannabinoids are compounds found in the cannabis plant that have medical therapeutic properties. Apart from CBD and THC cannabinoids also includes CBG, CBN, CBC, THCa and CBDa. There are over a hundred cannabinoids that have already been identified by scientists.
CBD is a non-psychoactive component from the cannabis plant and will not cause you to feel high or to put it in another way it won't intoxicate you. THC on the other hand is a psychoactive drugs and may cause you to feel high and alternate your state of mind. THC is good for stress and anxiety reduction, pain management and sleep while CBD is good for managing stress, anxiety, pain, inflammation and improving sleep.
Professor Iain McGregor, a lead researcher of the study commented that Tourette Syndrome is difficult to treat and affects 1 out of 100 adolescents in Australia.
Chris Wright a 35 years old man has been suffering from painful and severe tics his whole life and has shared that medical cannabis has lessens his conditions by 50%
The study included 22 adult subjects with severe TS. Participants from the study were given both medical cannabis oil that included CBD and THC and or placebo for two six-week blocks.
Dr. Phillip Mosley, the lead neuropsychiatrist in the study said that "This is the first rigorous and methodical trial of medicinal cannabis to be undertaken in a sufficiently large group of people to make definitive conclusions about its effectiveness."
Cannabiniods like THC and CBD are able to interact with receptors in the nerve cells located in the brain which is also part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Scientists now know that cannabis interacts with the endocannabinoid system located throughout the body to help enhance the regulations of mood, memory, pain sensation, anxiety management, sleep cycle and appetite.
The cannabinoids help to stimulate the receptors which then tightens the leaky filters and stops involuntary movements, vocalization and reduces tics.
The results from the study showed that medical cannabis can reduce tic levels in a life changing way.
They also found that cannabis made an impact on other conditions related to TS like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety better.
This is yet another reason why you should start using CBD today. Remember to consult with your doctor if you have a medical history or are under any medication. When you start CBD it's best to start with low dosage and increase the amount if needed and always choose CBD products that are safe for you. One way to do that is to always ask for lab test results from independent third-party labs or their Certificate of Analysis.
