Bipolar Disorder and CBD

Bipolar Disorder and CBD

Bipolar Disorder is a mental illness that causes extreme and fluctuating mood swings. Bipolar disorder often causes changes in mood, concentration and energy level.

Bipolar disorder was once known as Manic-depressive Illness or Manic Depression.

People with bipolar disorder will experience these two main phases: manic episodes and depressive episodes. During a manic episode a patient's mood may be easily elevated and become easily irritable. Their energy levels will go up and reduce their need for sleep. They will or may be involved with risky and impulsive behaviors. While in a depressive episode, patients experienced sadness and hopelessness. They become low in energy and lose all interest in activities that once made them happy.

Keep in mind that these episodes may vary in severity and duration.

Three types of bipolar disorder:

Bipolar I disorder

Is categorized by manic episodes at least for one week.

In some cases manic episodes may be severe and require hospitalization.

Having depressive symptoms together with manic episodes is possible.

Bipolar II disorder:

This is determined by patterns involving depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes.

Hypomanic episodes are periods of time during which one experiences an abnormal elevated or irritable mood or an increase in energy which is less severe than a manic episode.

Hypomanic may interfere and interrupt your daily life, but its symptoms are milder than manic episodes.

Cyclothymic Disorder

Is a reoccurring hypomanic and depressive symptoms that are less intense or does not last long enough to qualify as a hypomanic or depressive episodes.

Treatments for bipolar disorder may include:

  • Medications like antipsychotics and mood stabilizers

  • Psychotherapy

  • In some occasions treatment like light therapy, electroconvulsive therapy and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation may be used to treat bipolar.

  • Complementary treatment like natural products may be given to treat bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a very common health issue. According to the National Institute of Mental Health 4.4% of adults in the U.S. have suffered from bipolar disorder at one point of their life and we know that CBD has gain a lot of popularity for its natural holistic properties. How much impact does it have on bipolar disorder?

CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the hundreds of cannabinoids or chemical compounds found in the cannabis or hemp plant. CBD has no psychoactive properties so it will not intoxicate you or make you feel "high" like THC would especially in marijuana.

The reason CBD is well known and popular is because of its numerous therapeutic properties like pain relief, anti-inflammation, reduce stress and anxiety, promotes a better sleep cycle, treat insomnia, anti-nausea and it promotes a homogeneous balance for your body and mental health.

CBD is available as tinctures/oil, topical/balm, capsule, edibles, vaping oil, cannabis flower buds, or isolates.

Before we go further it is important to understand that more research is needed to understand the role of CBD or cannabis or mental health issues like Bipolar Disorder.

There is evidence that CBD can help with conditions surrounding depression and anxiety.

Because CBD has a positive effect on anxiety it would be a good candidate as an anti-stress treatment.

CBD is safe for human consumption. CBD is non-addictive and there are no withdrawal symptoms if you stop using it.

It is important to know that CBD may interact and interfere with the effects of other medications. Some medications may have understable effects when mixed with substances like grapefruits. This could also be true when mixed with CBD too.

CBD may affect the enzymes in your liver so it changes the way your body processes certain medications.

Researchers are trying to understand whether CBD has any effects on medications like antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, antidepressants and anti-anxiety like anxiolytics.

If you are planning on using CBD to treat bipolar disorder then make sure you discuss this with your medical provider first.

You should never replace medication with CBD. CBD should be used as a complimentary or alternative treatment.

Tips on how to deal with bipolar disorder:

  1. Avoid self-isolation and stay connected with your friends or family for support.

  2. Educate yourself on the symptoms of manic and depressive episodes.

  3. Track your symptoms. Keeping a log or diary of your daily mood, thoughts and behavior may be helpful.

  4. Find coping skills, whether that be breathing exercises, keeping a diary, staying in touch with your loved one, finding a hobby or exercise to cope with your distress.

  5. Develop a daily routine like taking medication on time, get enough sleep, daily exercise and find time for socializing. All the above will help in dealing with bipolar disorder.

  6. Have a crisis plan. During an emergency know who to call first whether that is your personal doctor, therapist, support group, family members or emergency numbers like the police or ambulance.
