CBD And Children

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a natural supplement product extracted from the cannabis plant.  CBD is very similar to its counterpart THC, except CBD does not have any psychoactive effects which makes you feel "high".  CBD is believed to treat chronic pain, reduce cancer discomfort, improve sleep, treat ADHD, help with mental disorders and have anti-inflammatory properties.

Not only are adults experimenting with CBD for medicinal purposes, but many parents are giving CBD to children to help with sleep, regulate mood and focus.  But is CBD safe for children?  What are the risks?  It is important to know that at Mellow Organic the recommended age to start using CBD is 18 years onwards.  We also recommend consulting with medical providers before starting to use CBD and information given here should be used only as guidelines and is not medical advice.

Things That You Should Consider Before Giving CBD To Children

  • Study the ingredients.  A lot of CBD products are unregulated and may contain more than advertised.

  • Ask for lab test results or Certificate of Analysis to know the actual amount of CBD and THC included in the product.

  • Consult with your medical specialist to know the right potency for CBD products is needed for your child.

  • Be mindful that THC in a high amount may cause intoxication.

  • Consider the best way for administering CBD into the body system.  It is believed that dropping CBD oil under your tongue is the most effective way, but there are other methods too like vaping and edibles.

  • Make sure the CBD product is free from harmful chemical residues, heavy metals or microbial.

  • CBD may interact with other medications

  • Experts have warned that even though CBD does help with sleep, when used with children it can make them tolerant to CBD and disrupt their sleep patterns if they stop using CBD.

  • We don't have enough information on the effects of CBD with children yet.  More scientific data is needed to fully understand how CBD can benefit children or whether or not it is safe for them.

Is CBD safe? That is a very important question and the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that “CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile.” They also explained that any irregular reaction from usage of CBD may be a result of interactions between CBD and other medications.  The WHO has stated that there is no evidence of substance abuse or dependence.  They explained that “To date there is no evidence of recreational use of CBD or any public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”  CBD specifically in the form of CBD Oil or tincture has been used to treat children for anxiety disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, OCD, and autism.

A good example of a lab tested and organic CBD brand is Mellow Organic.  Mellow Organic has two CBD oil products to choose from. Mellow CBD Oil is made from CBD Isolate and contains 900 mg of pure CBD mixed with MCT Oil.  We have two flavors to choose from: Natural and Orange.  But if you are looking for THC and other cannabinoids from the cannabis plant with 1,800 mg of CBD then we have Mellow Full Spectrum CBD Oil available in Natural flavor.  We also have CBD topicals like Mellow CBD Soothing Balm for relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety and relief of pain and inflammation.
