CBD and Parkinson's Disease

CBD and Parkinson’s Disease

Today we will be looking into the relationship between CBD and Parkinson’s disease.  According to the Mayo Clinic, Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and parts of the body controlled by the nerves.  Parkinson’s disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in the substantia nigra part of the brain resulting in unintended or uncontrollable body movements such as shaking, stiffness and difficulty in balance and coordination.  Symptoms for patients start gradually and increase through time.  Parkinson’s disease usually starts during middle to later in life and risk increases as you grow older.  Most people develop the disease around the age of 60 years onwards, but there are people who suffer from this disease at a young age.  The first signs of Parkinson’s disease includes tremors, muscle stiffness and slow movements.  Other signs that you should keep an eye on concerning Parkinson’s are insufficient sleep and insomnia, loss of automatic movements, changes in the your speech patterns and writing abilities.  Consult your doctor if you notice any significant changes in your health and well-being or if you notice any of these signs happening to you that may seem out of the ordinary.

Scientist still are not sure what actually causes Parkinson, but the risk factors that may trigger Parkinson includes age, sex, heredity and exposure to toxin and other environmental factors.  Most common cases of Parkinson happen to people from the age of 60 and above.  It is rare that young people get affected with the disease, but it does happen.  Men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than women.  Having a close relative with a history of Parkinson increases the chances of you being infected by the disease as well.  Pollution, toxin and unhealthy diet or lifestyle can play a major role in triggering Parkinson too.

Even though, Parkinson’s disease cannot be cured, but pharmaceutical treatment is an effective option to control and manage the disease’s motor symptoms and has improve the life span of patients as well.  The most common medication for Parkinson’s disease is Levodopa which is absorbed by the nerve cells in your brain and turn into dopamine.  Dopamine will transfer signals from your brain to the nerves that control movement.  This may be the most effective way of treatment, but through time the benefits of medication may become less consistent and there are side effects that may occur such as low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, lightheadedness and confusion.

There is a global movement happening as we speak.  People are looking for alternatives to traditional medicine and CBD is the perfect choice for it.  CBD is safe and does not contain harmful chemicals.  It comes with multiple health benefits such as improvement of sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, relief of pain and soreness and so much more. Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the main component found in the cannabis plant.  CBD is extracted for medicinally purposes as it is believed to carry multiple healing properties.  Another compound largely extracted from cannabis plant is THC.  Both CBD and THC are similar, but the biggest and most important difference is CBD does not make you feel high while you may feel intoxicated with THC.  CBD is known to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.  It is believed that CBD can reduce inflammation in the nervous system which may help reduce neurodegeneration that can cause Parkinson’s disease.

There are many forms of CBD to choose from today like tincture (oil), vape, capsules, edibles and topical.  At Mellow Organic we currently have Mellow Organic CBD Oil which is made from CBD Isolate that contains pure CBD and is THC free.  People with Parkinson’s disease use CBD for insomnia, anxiety, tremor, pain and dystonia.  Pure CBD does not contain psychoactive properties so it will not cause intoxication sensation and there is no addiction potential.  Some common and minor side effects that may occur are nausea, dry mouth and fatigue, but your body can tolerate CBD very well.  CBD is widely available online and in drug stores.  You do not need any prescription as long as the level of THC does not exceed 0.2%.
