CBD For ADHD

CBD For ADHD

Cannabidiol or CBD is one of the most popular cannabinoids which is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis sativa plant or hemp. According to a Gallup poll in 2019, 14% of Americans use CBD for sleep, anxiety and pain. The US FDA has also approved the drug that contains CBD, Epidolex which can be used with children for certain types of epilepsy.

Another well known compound that you might have heard of is Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. Both CBD and THC have similar therapeutic properties, but the biggest difference between the two is CBD does not have any psychoactive properties so it will not cause any intoxication and make you feel high while THC in high amounts can cause you to feel high and at the same time it will alter your cognitive state.

CBD is gaining popularity for its ability to enhance your body and mind. Researchers, have pointed out that CBD can benefit:

  • Pain and inflammation

  • Have neuroprotective properties

  • Benefit heart health

  • Relief anxiety and stress

  • Treat substance abuse

  • Improve sleep

  • Manage cancer treatment symptoms

  • Reduce symptoms related to mental health illness

  • Treat motion sickness and nausea

In the recent years CBD has gained a lot of recommendation as an alternative treatment for children with ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children and adults. ADHD affects people's behavior.

People that suffer from ADHD:

  • Have trouble paying attention

  • Can not control impulsive behavior

  • Difficulty keeping still

There are three main types of ADHD:

Inattentive type: people that fall under this category have difficulties paying attention, following direction, being organized, may seem forgetful and easily distracted.

Hyperactive-impulsive type: find themselve being fidgety, restless and cannot sit still. They may be talkative or like to interrupt people.

Combined type: include symptoms from both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive types of ADHD.

Today, we are still not sure about the exact causes of ADHD, but the development of ADHD may include genetics, environmental factors, brain injury or problems with the central nervous system. The risk factors that may accelerate the development of ADHD includes blood relatives like parents or sibling that suffer from ADHD or other mental illness. Exposure to the environmental factors like being exposed to lead or toxins. Drug consumption, drinking alcohol or smoking during pregnancy. Premature birth can make be a factor in developing ADHD.

Can CBD help with ADHD?

Though CBD may not be able to help with impulsivity, inattention or hyperactivity which is disruptive when suffered in adults, but CBD can play a large role with symptoms commonly found in ADHD such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorder and insomnia. But on the other hand, CBD seems to help with hyperactivity in children with autism spectrum. The research is still inconclusive and is ongoing.

Ned Hallowell, MD an expert in ADHD shares that CBD is the next cutting edge in treatment for ADHD.

For ADHD right now the focus point for CBD is its ability to manage anxiety. With the right dosage it could calm you body and brain up like valium or alcohol would without having to worry any addictive properties.

Scientists are not able to fully understand how CBD works with your body, but we know that for starters CBD reacts with the Endocannabinoid System which is a network of receptors, enzymes and lipids that help to regulate mood, pain, sleep, appetite, learning and memory.

Research on CBD and its impact on ADHD has not been easy. The quality of CBD is still very hard to determine. The content of CBD in a CBD product or whether the CBD is free from THC or not should be clearly labeled. A study of 84 CBD products showed that one-quarter of the products contain less CBD than advertised and 18 bottles had THC. Mislabeling or failing to deliver products with the correct ingredients can cause adverse reactions.

In 2018, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that CBD and cannabinoids that do not have THC does not contain any psychoactive properties and will not cause intoxication or alter the cognitive state of mind. CBD is safe for consumption and is not addictive.

THC on the other hand has psychoactive properties which will intoxicate you and make you feel high. THC has the ability to slow you down physically and mentally while your are under the effects of THC.

It is important to distinguish between CBD and THC. Some CBD products do come with THC like products made from Full Spectrum CBD while some CBD do not include any THC like the ones made from CBD Isolate.

CBD is also very successful in combating depression. Some studies have shown that CBD may act as antidepressants for patients with ADHD. It is important to note that most studies have been done on lab mice and more research is needed.

Is CBD Safe For Children With ADHD?

We do not know yet whether CBD is safe for children with ADHD. There are some evidence that CBD may help with anxiety on children with ADHD, but there is not enough evidence to support this yet. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend the usage of CBD with children with or without ADHD.

If you are considering using CBD for ADHD in children or adults we recommend that you follow these guidelines:

  • Talk with your health provider first

  • Discuss your medication and medical history with your doctor

  • Understand that CBD may interact with other medications.

  • Choose CBD products made from CBD isolate or CBD Broad Spectrum and make sure that it is THC free.

  • CBD may contain side effects like diarrhea, dry mouth, drowsiness and changes in appetite.

  • Start with a low dosage and increase the amount if needed.

  • Monitor your conditions and stop taking CBD if you or child may experience any ailments or discomfort.

  • Choose CBD products that has been lab tested from independent third party and is free from harmful chemicals and pollutants.
