Cannabidiol-Enriched Cannabis Oil Shows Promise in Reducing Seizures in Children with West Syndrome
There's encouraging news for families dealing with West syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy in young children. This study explored the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil, a cannabis derivative, for children whose seizures weren't controlled by traditional medications.
Reduced Seizures and Improved Brain Activity
The study included 8 children with West syndrome who hadn't responded to other treatments. Four children saw a significant decrease in seizures, with reductions of more than half. Overall, the average daily seizures dropped from a very high 63 to 31 for the entire group.
Encouragingly, improvements weren't limited to seizure numbers. EEG tests, which measure brain activity, also showed improvement in 7 children. These improvements ranged from 20% to 80% better brain activity.
Safe and Well-Tolerated
The CBD oil seemed safe for the children who experienced reduced seizures. Side effects were mild and temporary, such as sleepiness, nausea, and irritability.
More Research Is Needed
This is a promising start, but the study was small. More research is needed to confirm these findings. There are also other studies exploring CBD for different types of childhood epilepsy, which is encouraging news.
For families facing West syndrome, this study offers a potential new treatment option, and that's a positive step forward.
