Alarming Rise in CBD Vaping Among U.S. Teens
A new study published in JAMA Network Open has uncovered a troubling trend: more U.S. teens are vaping cannabidiol (CBD) than ever before. The research delves into the growing prevalence of CBD vaping among adolescents and explores the reasons behind this rise.
The Findings
While not all U.S. states have legalized THC-rich cannabis products, the 2018 Farm Bill made hemp-derived CBD legal as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. Vaping has quickly become the go-to method for teens to consume CBD due to its convenience and discreet nature.
In 2022, a surge in cannabis vaping among teens was observed, particularly among twelfth graders, followed by tenth graders. Although CBD doesn't produce a high like THC, it still poses potential health risks, including harm to the lungs, liver, and male reproductive system.
This study sought to identify which groups of teens are most likely to vape CBD, aiming to inform strategies to address this growing concern.
Researchers analyzed data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS), which included responses from 28,291 students aged 11 to 18 across 341 schools. The survey asked students if they had ever vaped CBD or used e-cigarettes, and whether they had done so in the past 30 days.
The study found that CBD vaping is particularly prevalent among e-cigarette users. Hispanic teens were more likely to be current e-cigarette users and reported higher CBD use than their non-Hispanic White peers, possibly due to lower media literacy. Additionally, sexual minority teens also reported higher rates of CBD vaping.
In conclusion, the findings point to an urgent need for educational campaigns to raise awareness about the risks of CBD vaping, particularly among Hispanic youth and sexual minority groups. Stronger regulations may also be necessary to combat this rising trend.
