Osteoporosis weakens bones to the point where they become brittle, making them prone to fractures from falls or even minor stresses like bending over or coughing. The most common locations for these fractures are the hip, wrist, and spine.

Bone tissue is continually being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis develops when the rate of new bone formation fails to match the rate of old bone loss.

Osteoporosis can affect people of all races, but white and Asian women, particularly post-menopausal women, are at the highest risk. Medications, a balanced diet, and weight-bearing exercise can help prevent bone loss or enhance the strength of already weakened bones.

Symptoms of osteoporosis includes:

  • Back pain from broken or collapsed bone in the spine area

  • Gradually losing height over time

  • Having a stooped posture

  • Bones that break too easily

Risk factors that causes osteoporosis:

  • Alcohol intake

  • Smoking

  • Inactive lifestyle

  • Medication

  • Low level of calcium and vitamin D

  • Anorexia Nervosa

  • Sex hormones and abnormal or absent menstrual period

  • Family history of osteoporosis

  • Ethnicity

  • Body size

  • Age

  • Gender

CBD for Osteoporosis

Scientific research suggests that Cannabidiol (CBD) could be an effective treatment for osteoporosis, providing a natural alternative for managing symptoms. In this article, we delve into the nature of osteoporosis and how CBD may offer relief, based on the most recent scientific findings.

CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is responsible for regulating various cognitive and physical functions, such as bone mass regulation. The ECS consists of two primary receptors, CB1 and CB2, which are both present in bone tissue. By comprehending the ECS's influence on bone health and related functions, we can gain insights into how CBD may impact osteoporosis.

CBD for bone growth

Preclinical studies suggest that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a crucial role in bone healing and maintaining bone homeostasis. This implies that CBD, a cannabinoid, may potentially accelerate bone healing by activating cannabinoid receptors. This notion is further supported by a 2020 review on the impact of cannabinoids on bone formation and bone healing, which reported that CBD treatment had been observed to improve bone healing in animals, although further clinical trials are required for scientific validation. Additionally, a 2023 study conducted on mice revealed that CBD has cell-specific effects that can be harnessed to boost bone metabolism. When administered to an osteoporotic population, CBD may positively influence bone morphology, suggesting the need for further investigation.

Pain Relief Potential for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can cause significant pain, especially after fractures. Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in cannabis, might be helpful in managing this pain. CBD is known for its pain-relieving properties. For instance, a 2022 study on CBD for arthritis pain showed improvement in pain (83%), physical function (66%), and sleep quality (66%) for those using CBD.

Is CBD A Safer Alternative to Opioids?

Another 2022 review suggests CBD as a promising alternative to opioid painkillers for chronic pain. Unlike opioids, pure CBD doesn't cause intoxication, making it a potentially safer option.

CBD for inflammation

CBD's anti-inflammatory properties might be beneficial for bone health. Inflammation inside bones is linked to bone loss and fractures, especially in osteoporosis. This chronic inflammation can damage bone tissue and hinder repair.

A 2022 study suggests CBD can reduce inflammation and encourage bone cells to behave normally. This could potentially help the body build stronger bones in situations with inflammation.

CBD To Help With Sleep

Trouble sleeping can be a side effect of osteoporosis, especially for those in pain. CBD might help by easing pain and anxiety, promoting relaxation and better sleep.

Studies show promise:

  • A study on adults with anxiety or sleep issues found that after taking CBD for 2 months, 78-79% reported less anxiety and 56% slept better.

  • Another study showed that nearly half (48%) of people using CBD for sleep fell asleep faster, and 40% reported overall better sleep.

It's important to remember that while these results are encouraging, more research is needed to definitively say whether CBD helps with osteoporosis management.

Things To Consider Before Buying Your Next CBD Products

  • Consider the side effects:  generally CBD is considered to be very safe and non-addictive as endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), however some people may experience side effects from CBD like dry mouth, drowsiness, fatigue, changes in appetite or diarrhea.

  • The quality and source of your CBD matters:  only buy reputable source.  Look for lab test results from third party lab and Certificate of Analysis before buying your CBD products to make sure that it is free from pesticides and harmful substances.

  • Type of CBD:  there are three types of CBD available:  CBD Isolate which contains just CBD and no other elements from the cannabis hemp plant.  Full Spectrum is the most complete form of CBD as it contains CBD, THC and other minor cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids.  Broad Spectrum is similar to the full spectrum option except it does not include THC.  CBD products are also available as oil/tincture, vaping oil, edibles, topicals, capsules or flowers.

  • Dosage:  the unique thing about CBD is that it is very difficult to recommend the right dosage for you as this depends on the potency of CBD.  The higher the potency the lest CBD you need and vice versa.  Dosage also depends on your body’s tolerance rate of CBD.  It is recommended to explore and experiment until you find the right dosage to help you.  Start with a low dosage and increase if needed.
