Medication That Should Not Be Taken With CBD
We know CBD has many therapeutic benefits that could help treat and boost both mental and physical health, but it is essential to know that CBD and some medications should not be taken together, because there have been numerous studies showing that CBD may interact or interfere with the quality, performance and enhance side effects of certain medications.
There are some things we need to understand about CBD before we continue:
CBD is a natural occuring chemical compound or cannabinoid found in cannabis sativa plants.
CBD does not have any psychoactive effects so it will not cause intoxication.
CBD can be used to treat various illnesses physically and mentally.
CBD is non-addictive and contains no withdrawal syndrome. Humans can tolerate CBD very well. We also have our own cannabinoid in our body called the "Endocannabinoid System."
Cannabidiol or CBD is known to interact with herbal supplements, over-the-counter medications and prescription medication.
CBD can have an affect on the metabolism of certain medications. It can lead to side effects and some can be life threatening.
Consult with a medical provider or pharmacist and inform them that you are currently taking CBD as an alternative or complementary treatment.
Cannabidiol or CBD is phytocannabinoids that was first founded in 1940. CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis sativa plants. There are 113 identified cannabinoids or chemical compounds in the cannabis plant. You may have heard of CBD, but there are other known cannabinoids including THC, CBG, CBN and CBC.
Common uses of CBD includes treating chronic pain, anxiety, stress, inflammation, insomnia and helps regulate mood and immunity systems.
It is true that CBD can cause reactions when taken with other medications. This is because CBD is metabolized with the CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 of the liver enzymes which are responsible for breaking down many medications (a lot of medications are broken down by enzymes in the liver too). When you take CBD together with other medications, the CBD can increase the level of medications in the blood level and may result in unfavorable circumstances.
CBD also affect receptors in your body too and mixing medication with CBD at the same time could affect the receptors that are responsible for your bodily functions.
Now, let's look into the list of various medication where CBD may interact with:
Anti-epileptic Medications:
Drugs to treat and control epilepsy and epileptic syndromes or anticonvulsants which affect the liver enzymes as it needs it to metabolize such as CBD. Drugs like phenytoin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, and phenobarbital will enhance the breakdown of CBD and result in failure of your body to utilize the benefits of CBD.
Anti-epileptic medications like Lamotrigine when taken with CBD can lead to an increase in side effects while taking Ethosuximide with CBD make decrease the performance of the medication.
Benzodiazepines:
CBD interacts with many Benzodiazepines medications in the market which are used to treat seizures and anxiety.
Clonazepam and Chlordiazepoxide are two examples that lose their abilities to control seizures when taken with CBD. While the levels of Lorazepam, Diazepam and Clonazepam may increase, leading to undesirable effects when used with CBD.
Antidepressants:
The two main antidepressants classes: Selective Serotonin Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Tricyclic Antioxidants (TCAs) may interact with CBD. Medications like Sertraline may increase aggression and anxiety when used with CBD.
CBD may amplify the side effects of Amitriptyline when used together.
Opioids:
When CBD is used with Morphine, CBD can increase the effects of morphine and increase the risk from morphine. On the other hand, Fentanyl can tolerate well with CBD and appears safe when used together.
THC:
We still don't fully understand how CBD can interact with THC as there are a lot of contradictory information nonetheless, high doses of CBD (>600mg) prevents THC metabolism and can help THC to last longer especially with its mind altering effects while some studies pointed out that CBD can prevent negative effects of THC and kill the "high" from THC.
CBD and Other Medications:
CBD can increase the levels and side effects of drugs like Warfarin, Cyclosporine and Tacrolimus due to the the metabolizing of the medications and CBD can result in an increase in side effects for long-term use.
Please remember if you are taking blood thinners, medication for heart rhythm, thyroid and or medication for seizures then you want to consult with your doctor or pharmacist before using CBD.
This is by no chance saying that CBD is unsafe. As a matter of fact it is safer than many supplements or medications available today.
CBD is non-addictive and have no withdrawal symptoms. Even though there may be side effects from using CBD in some people but tend to go away after a while. Side effects could include diarrhea, drowsiness, fatigue or dry mouth. CBD is safe for long term use.
