New Findings Shines a Spotlight On The Potential Of Cannabis On Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Autism and Skin Disorders

Let's catch up on the latest research examining the potential of cannabis on treating Type 2 Diabetes, Autism, Fibromyalgia and Skin Disorder.

The latest research shows that cannabis like CBD and THC may possess protective agents against the risk of Type 2 Diabetes.

Researchers review previous studies for the role of cannabis’s impact on metabolism.  They focused on 7 studies, 11 surveys and 4 cohort studies and found that people who consume cannabis are 0.48 times less likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes.  However research expresses the need for more research on the impact of cannabis concerning the metabolism and diabetes to better understand the effects of cannabis.

A survey of 1,200 cancer patients shows that almost one third of patients consume cannabis after receiving their cancer diagnosis.  25% used cannabis for lung cancer while 59% used it for testicular cancer.

The reason for using cannabis like CBD varies according to the study.  For instance, 48% use cannabis for sleep while 46% use cannabis for mood enhancement (stress, anxiety and depression) while 42% of the people admit to using cannabis for pain.

Good news is that 70-90% of the cancer patients say that cannabis has improved their cancer symptoms.

The research focused on administering full spectrum CBD to 20 patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Most of the patients received treatment for 6 months and the level of CBD/THC were adjusted accordingly to the needs of each patient.

Researchers used an online survey system which collected feedbacks from patients and their caregivers on core systems (social interactions, repetitive behaviors and communication skills), comorbid symptoms (symptoms or disorders that may coexist from autism like depression, sleep disorder or anxiety which researchers would like to know whether they would be affected by full spectrum CBD or not) and quality of life.

They found that 18 out of 20 patients had a positive improvement in the quality of life and reported very mild side effects.  On a positive note the amount of medications for most patients were reduced and in some cases even discontinued.  This is a positive sign that cannabis can potentially benefit people with autism or ASD.

Researchers reviewed previous cases studies of CBD for the treatment of psoriasis, dermatitis, acne and aging skin.  Researchers found that cannabinoids like CBD have good potential for skin disorder especially for people that may have limited options such as for patients that are prone to side effects or may be sensitive to medications and foreign substances.

CBD may be an effective treatment for psoriasis or dermatitis and other chronic skin disorders as CBD can be referred to as a “multifunctional ingredient” which can help reduce skin products and be a treatment for treating chronic skin disorders.  More research is needed to fully understand the full potential of CBD and to formulate the best way to utilize CBD for skin health.

Researchers collected data from people that used medical cannabis in treating fibromyalgia symptoms during the duration from January 2017 to July 2021.  It was found that medical cannabis was able to reduce the severity of fibromyalgia symptoms by 75%. That means that medical cannabis can assist with pain management for patients that suffer from fibromyalgia and also help with symptoms associated with fibromyalgia such as depression and anxiety.
