People With Parkinson's Disease Share Their Experience With CBD

John Bennett has been managing their Parkinson's disease (PD) for years, trying various medications and therapies to alleviate symptoms. While levodopa has been effective in managing their motor symptoms, He has experienced dyskinesia, a common side effect. They have also explored dietary supplements like CoQ10, but with limited success.

With the recent legalization of medical marijuana in their state, John became intrigued by its potential benefits for PD. Although research is limited, some studies suggest that marijuana may help with both motor and non-motor symptoms.

Understanding Cannabinoids

Marijuana contains compounds called cannabinoids, with THC and CBD being the most well-known. THC is responsible for the "high" associated with marijuana use, while CBD does not have psychoactive effects. These cannabinoids are available in various forms, including dried leaves, oils, pills, and even gummy bears.

Challenges and Legal Considerations

CBD can be expensive and is not covered by insurance. Additionally, the FDA has not approved medical marijuana, classifying it as a Schedule 1 drug. This classification hinders research and has led organizations like the MJF Foundation to call for reclassification.

While federally illegal, medical marijuana is legal in 33 states for specific conditions, including PD in some states. However, state laws vary regarding approved conditions, formulations, and physician certification requirements.

His's CBD Experiment

Despite the lack of conclusive evidence and high cost, John decided to try CBD oil to see if it could alleviate their PD symptoms, particularly pain and stiffness. After a few days of use, they haven't noticed significant improvement, but they plan to finish the bottle before making a final decision.

The Future of Medical Marijuana

With increasing legalization, demand for medical marijuana is growing. Hopefully, this will lead to more extensive and rigorous research on its effectiveness for PD and other conditions. In the meantime, people with Parkinson's will have to rely on anecdotal evidence to determine whether medical marijuana is a viable treatment option. As Rachel Dolhun, MD, from the Michael J Fox Foundation, states, further research is needed to determine the correct dose, formulation, side effects, drug interactions, and benefits of marijuana for PD.
