The Role of Cannabinoids for Obesity

Let's examine whether cannabinoids can play a role in obesity as a global crisis.

What is obesity?

Overweight and obesity are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but according to the World Health Organization they defined both as abnormal or excessive accumulation that can present a risk of health.  A body mass index (BMI) of over 25 is considered overweight and over 30 is obese.

  • Since 2012, 1 out of 8 people around the world are living with obesity

  • Since 1990 the amount of adult obesity has doubled and and quadrupled in adolescent obesity

  • 2.5 billion adults are overweight since 2022 and over 890 million are obese

  • 37 million children under 5 are overweight

  • Over 390 million children and adolescents are overweight of which 160 million are living with obesity

Experts believe obesity may result from heredity, parental and postnatal influences, poor diet, not enough physical activities, too much television or gaming, not enough sleep, stress and mental health.

Experts have found that cannabinoids like THCa may be able to treat obesity while other cannabinoids like CBD and THCV can also play a role too.

Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCa) can be found in CBD products made from broad spectrum and full spectrum.  THCa is also available in Mellow Full Spectrum CBD Oil.  THCa is a precursor to THC and is in abundance with raw cannabis.  Unlike THC, THCa does not include psychoactive effects so it does not contain any intoxicating effects.  THCa binds to the PPARs receptors which helps to regulate the metabolism by helping to manage fat and sugar.  Making it very useful for treating metabolic disorders like diabetes and obesity.

Scientists have recently found that THCa when compared to a common diabetic medication like Rosiglitazone, THCa has less ability to promote fat production than antidiabetic drug while THCa helps to create bone regenerating cells which is a side effect from the antidiabetic drug.

In animal studies, THCa promotes thermogenesis, reduces fat mass, improves glucose tolerance and prevents metabolic issues.

THCa promotes the transformation of white fat to brown fat which helps reduce overall body fat.  THCa is known to contain anti-inflammatory effects which are able to counteract inflammation caused by a high fat diet.

Experts also found that CBD can:

  • Turn white fat into calorie burning brown fat

  • Decrease appetite

  • Improve lipid metabolism

  • Fight off inflammation

  • Increase thermogenesis

  • Improve insulin sensitivity

  • Have positive gut bacteria effect

THCV is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid like CBD.  It can be a great asset to the fight against obesity as it can regulate appetite, boost thermogenesis, increase energy levels and experts believe that THCV can help limit fat storage.  However, due to the nature of THCV, a lower dose can reduce appetite while a higher dosage can increase appetite.

More research is needed to fully understand how much potential THCa, THCV, CBD or other cannabinoids can impact obesity.  Experts need to be able to formulate the right dosage and understand the potential side effects that may come with consuming cannabinoids.  In the meantime if you are looking for a high quality and lab tested CBD product then we are proud to present to you our very own brand, Mellow Organic.
