Understanding How CBD Can Help With Inflammation

Understanding How CBD Can Help With Inflammation

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is your body's biological response to when your body is under attack of harmful stimuli such as viruses, bacterial or pathogens, toxins, irritants or toxins.

Inflammation is a protective responsible that is a result from activating the immune system, blood vessels and molecular mediators

When your immune system gets activated your body will send out inflammatory cells and cytokines. They will kick start the inflammatory response which will target the bacterial and other harmful substances.

During the inflammatory process you may experience pain, redness, swelling or bruising.

There are two types of inflammation: Acute inflammation and Chronic Inflammation.

In acute inflammation, your body will respond to any damage done to your body such as injuries like cuts and open wounds. By healing the wounds your body sends out inflammatory cells to the injury and then the healing starts.

During acute inflammation you may experience pain, tenderness, swelling or heat.

In chronic inflammation your body will continue to send inflammatory cells even if there is no longer any need for it. In cases like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory cells will continue to attack joint tissues causing inflammation and pain resulting in damage to joint areas and deformities.

Patients with chronic Inflammation may experience abdominal pain, cheer pain, fatigue, fever, joint pain and skin rashes.

When you read about CBD you may come across people claiming that CBD can help with inflammation.

Cannabidiol or CBD is a natural chemical compound derived from the cannabis sativa plant. CBD is also known as a cannabinoid. There are over a hundred cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant which includes THC, CBG, CBN, THCa or CBDa.

CBD is well known for:

  • Reduction of stress and anxiety

  • Pain management

  • Anti-inflammatory properties

  • Anti-seizures properties

  • Fights mental disorder

  • Manage sleep-wake cycle

  • Eliminate diabetic risk factors

  • Anti-seizures properties

  • Reduce nausea

  • Appetite management

  • Improves skin health

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in your body. The ECS has a network of receptors spreading throughout your body. The receptors regulate important bodily functions like pain, mood, sleep and immune system.

The way the endocannabinoid system works is very similar to cannabinoids from the cannabis plants. It is said that our body has our own cannabinoid. The endocannabinoid system is essential to your body system and it still functions even without you introducing cannabis to your body.

Numerous preclinical and clinical studies have found out that CBD carries anti-inflammatory properties which have the potential to benefit health. Currently, researchers are trying to understand the full therapeutic properties that come with cannabidiol.

Today, people are buying CBD products that are readily available in pharmacies, supermarkets and online to treat arthritis, muscle soreness, headaches, injuries from physical activities and even for rashes and skin care.

The ECS is responsible for regulating nerve functions, emotion, energy, pain, inflammation, sleep and immune system. Cannabinoids like CBD and THC interact with the ECS and help enhance the functions of the body.

Generally, we know that cannabinoids have anti-inflammation properties to suppress the immune system and some researchers are finding out that cannabinoids may help to increase immune functions and in some conditions make cannabinoids like CBD even more effective.

CBD and THC enhance the production of interleukin (IL)-2 which is a cytokine that helps to activate the T cells. T cells are a type of white blood cell that plays an important role in our body's immune response.

This is all a very promising sign pointing to the fact that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties on many levels.

Today CBD is available as tinctures/oil, topical/balm, capsule, edibles, vaping oil, cannabis flower buds, or isolates. You can even choose if you want your CBD products to include THC or to be THC-free. There are 3 types of CBD products available in the market. Full Spectrum CBD usually comes with a high amount of CBD and includes up to 0.3% THC, a variety of cannabinoids from the cannabis plant and terpenes, flavonoids and essential fatty acids. Broad Spectrum CBD is very similar to the full spectrum option except it does not include THC. The final type, CBD Isolate is considered to be the purest form of CBD as it has been extracted to include only CBD and free from THC and other cannabinoids, terpenes or flavonoids.
